We're in the throws of Vermont winter; single-degree temps, heaps of snow and ice. But as a grower of wedding flowers and a Vermont wedding florist, this is the time I start dreaming about spring.
For me, it starts with ordering seeds, planning what seeds to start when and mapping out my garden plan for the year. While I'm sitting in front of my space heater, avoiding going outside to take out the trash because I'm comfy on my couch, I thought I would launch this four-part series with talking about the benefits of buying local Vermont flowers.
In the next three posts, we'll show you some of the best flowers Vermont grows in Spring, Summer and Fall.
Benefits of having seasonal, local flowers in your Vermont wedding
Many of my couples ask me to prioritize Vermont flowers for their wedding, and I love that. I can even grow something specific for my couples if I know before the growing season starts.
There are so many benefits to have in-season, local flowers, but I'll name just a few here.
You'll have the Happiest Flowers
When you prioritize local, in-season flowers, they are going to be as fresh as it gets. They aren't going to be traveling from far away in a box, but from my backyard or one of our wonderful flower farm partners like June Farm or Understory Farm. This means they are going to be perky, happy and generally of a much higher quality. Because they have been cut just days before your wedding, they will last far beyond your wedding day.

More Unique Blooms
I, and many local flower farms, grow varieties of flowers that just aren't available at a wholesaler. You certainly aren't going to find a Lakeview Peach Fuzz dahlia from a DIY national flower chain. Stunning color combinations and more vibrant colors. Local flowers are well-cared for be people that genuinely love flowers.
Potential Cost Savings
When you are buying flowers locally, most people think they are generally less expensive than buying wholesale flowers for your Vemont Wedding. If you Google "how to save money on wedding flowers" the AI overview tells you that buying local flowers will help cut the cost. This, to some degree, is true.
The cost savings comes from a few factors. First, buying local means you are generally buying flowers in-season. If you've ever tried to find a peony in August, they'd probably be 10+ dollars a stem wholesale for a sad looking peony, because they are quite far out of season. However, if you have a June wedding and can get them locally, the price you pay for that (much more beautiful) bloom is significantly less. You're also not paying transport fees and markup from a distributor. Farm - to florist - to wedding. Instead of farm - distributor - wholesaler - florist - wedding.
I still would not expect local wedding flowers to be 'cheap'. In reality, it's a very specialized craft to grow beautiful flowers and skilled artisans work so hard to bring them to you.
Having Vermont-grown flowers that truly reflect the rare beauty of Vermont's seasons is, indeed, a luxury. But it is an affordable one and worth every penny.
Supporting our Local Economy
This is the one that's nearest and dearest to my heart. Vermont's wedding industry is a huge contributor to the state's economy. Last year weddings contributed about 176 million dollars to the state with over 4500 weddings in 2025 alone.
When you choose local flowers, you support our farmers, our economy and the incredible vendors in this industry. Many of them are close friends of mine, and I like to keep my friends in business. I love that they are able to do something that they love because my vendor friends are exceptionally good at what they do.
I'll close with one of the favorite flowers I've ever grown - well, other than dahlias! These beautiful Striato ranunculus are breathtaking. I haven't grown them in a few seasons because they are so short-lived in Vermont, but they sure do make the most out of their little growing season.
